The population of Saraqeb in Syria expresses post-revolutionary changes and the ongoing misery of their country through graffiti. The walls provide the basis for their existence as well as protection from outside violence. They bear the names of martyrs, common expressions, poems, revolutionary slogans and other graffiti. The documentary „Lovers‘ Notebooks“ was shot over three years by Saraqeb inhabitant and media activist Eyad Aljarod (this is his first film), and co-directed by Canadian-Syrian Aliaa Khachouk. The film reveals the constant tension between revolutionary energy and despair, between leaving a place and deciding to return, between the euphoria over a beautiful image and the fear of war. Throughout the film and through the night, the walls of Saraqeb are filled with text like a lover’s notebook.
