The Syrian diversity in focus
Saturdays, 1st September – 6th October 2018, 6 – 8pm
All events will be simultaneously translated in Arabic/ German.
Syria is a multinational state, in the north there are Kurds, in the south the Druzes and at the meditaranean coast the Alawites. Christians, Turkmen and Armenians are spread over the entire state.
Furthermore many followers of very small groups such as the Circassians, the Ismailites and the Yazidis belong to the Syrian people.
Together the ethnic, religious and language focused minorities in Syria are about forty per cent of the entire population. Their multitude is the foundation of Syria´s diversity, their different languages and religious orientations are an important part of the cultural richness of Syria. Each group has its individual history, which characterizes their positions in the current war.
With the event series “Black-Box Syria” we wish to turn the focus on the cultural richness of Syria. The ethnic, religious and language related groups, which do not belong to the Sunni – Arabic majority and often do not have a vote in public, should occupy the centre stage. The participants will orient themselves along the following questions:
- What did it mean for you personally to grow up in Syria as a Kurd, an Armenian etc.? What did you hope for as the demonstrations began in 2011?
- What position does the group you associate yourself with take in the current war? What does the war mean for your group?
- What are, in your view, the central political demands of your group for the development of the Syrian state?
A few of the spokespeople will be representatives of their institutions, while others will share only their individual perspectives. Within the last event participants of the dialogue workshop of the European Centre for Kurdish studies, will present the since July 2016 compiled principals, which were created by them, for a future Syrian constitution. We look forward to the variety of Syrian perspectives!
